What a book to kick off the summer with! I was intrigued by the title ‘Bad Tourists’ when I was scrolling through July releases, and let me just say, it’s chilling.

I was lucky enough to receive an ARC of Bad Tourists from Simon & Schuster and Avid Reader Press and I’m voluntarily leaving this review.

To be honest, I have no words after finishing this book. It took me on quite a journey actually, getting me hooked into it to start and leaving me thoroughly chilled and unsettled. A trio of friends go to the Maldives for a post-divorce vacation, a vacation that slowly goes awry following the discovery of a dead tourist and the reopening of a 22-year-old massacre case. But it’s clear, that one of them is lying…

Bad Tourists gives you a false sense of safety throughout most of the story, and gradually increases the frequency of unsettling thoughts and moments. It’s clear that someone is lying and it leaves your brain whirling, trying to figure out who it is. To add to that, the different POVs give you a multi-dimensional view that the friends aren’t as close as we believe, no one is truly completely innocent and there are a few things (that we readers see) that don’t add up in each of their stories.

It was thrilling to read as everything unfolded, and very unsettling when we finally got the killer’s POV and unravelled their intricate lies. I was able to guess the direction of where the book was headed, but I just enjoyed the ride it took me on. It felt like a lot of research was put into this, and I feel that it elevated the story.

If you like the works written by Toni Anderson (like I do) then you’ll likely enjoy Bad Tourists by Caro Carver. The novel is out in bookstores now, so grab a copy and prepare to be unsettled in the summer heat.
