Spiced Right by Gigi Templeton

Another one of my few early NetGalley reviews, and I thoroughly enjoyed this book even though it’s not a trope that I typically read. For Spiced Right, be prepared for a second chance romance with witty banter that brings on the heat.

Tropes: Second Chance, Slow Burn, Reclusive MC

Info: There are some parts that go into our MC’s backstory and how/why she became a recluse that may be triggering for some. They include miscarriage, abandonment and isolation.

Spiced Right was something I wasn’t expecting because I don’t read second-chance storylines a lot, but I thoroughly enjoyed it. It’s hard to really choose why between the great bantering between our main character Jillian, and her college boyfriend Jack. Then there’s the cool careers of the characters, Jillian’s hot sauce/pepper production and Jack’s BBQ YouTube channel.

And while we were pretty much in the dark as to why Jack really had to go back to the farm and the two lost touch, the novel really shows us why and how Jack feels responsible for the farm.

I got so angry hearing Jillian’s backstory, the fact that her fiance abandoned her when she was in the hospital in physical and emotional pain, I have no words. She miscarried a baby she didn’t know she had, and was dealing with the emotional kickback from it but no, he had to make it all about him.

I get that he was feeling immense guilt because (if I’m not mistaken) he’s the one who took her to the concert in the first place, and got pushed out by the crowd and couldn’t get back to her. But not notifying her family? Packing up and moving while she’s in the hospital? Wow.

Overall, I enjoyed this book. It’s not too spicy – except for the food descriptions – and while there’s quite a lot of banter and back and forth between characters, I didn’t get lost in all of that. There are a lot of characters though, and with Jack’s big and rambunctious family, it’s easy to forget who’s who. But I still would recommend this book nonetheless.
